We wanted to let our customers know about a new scam that targets children's Social Security numbers even before they have bank accounts. Here's how it works: thieves conduct computer sweeps to find dormant Social Security numbers, then sell those numbers under another name to help people easily establish credit and rack up huge debts.
What can you do?
1. Talk to your kids about ID theft. Teach children never to divulge their personal information over the phone or online.
2. Always destroy extra documents that list your child's number.
3. Watch for red flags - if your child receives pre-approved credit card offers or calls from collection agencies, run a credit report on your child immediately to see if there's been fraud.
4. For more information go to www.ftc.gov/idtheft and if you think you have a problem call the FTC at 1-877-382-4357
